Star Family is the closing page of The Alien Archive (page 44). It gathers all thirty-two of the Archive's beings and phenomena into a single "family" and leaves the reader with three messages. Extraterrestrials, like humans, cover the full spectrum of intentions. Only benevolent beings should be invited into one's field. And each person has the gift of free will to decide what they accept as truth. The page ends with a note of love to the "star fam". Its themes of kinship, discernment and inner knowing match some of the oldest ideas in Gnostic literature: the "seed of Seth", the "immovable race" and the "children of the light", a spiritual family whose members recognize one another by the light they share.

Just as some humans have positive intentions and some humans have negative intentions, ETs also cover the full spectrum. While exploring these cosmic realms, it's important to only invite BENEVOLENT BEINGS into your field!

Gnostic perspective

The Archive ends with family, and so do many Gnostic texts. The Sethian writings in particular describe their readers as members of a hidden lineage, a race or seed of light scattered through the world, who recognize their true kin by an inner knowing rather than by blood or nation.

The seed of Seth

In the Apocryphon of John, the heavenly realm is ordered around the Four Luminaries. The perfect Man, Adamas, is placed with the first light, "his son Seth over the second aeon", and "in the third aeon the seed of Seth was placed over the third light Daveithai. And the souls of the saints were placed (there)."[1] On earth, Adam "begot the likeness of the son of man. He called him Seth, according to the way of the race in the aeons".[1] The lineage of Seth thus has a family above and a family below. Modern scholars use the name Sethianism for the Gnostic current that called itself by this name. The historian John D. Turner traces it partly to a group of biblical interpreters known as the Sethites, "the 'seed of Seth'".[2]

The immovable race

The Apocryphon also calls this family "the immovable race". When John asks whether all souls will be saved, the Savior answers that "it is difficult to explain them to others except to those who are from the immovable race". At the flood, "not only Noah, but also many other people from the immovable race" hid "in a luminous cloud". The whole revelation closes with the instruction to pass it on "secretly to your fellow spirits, for this is the mystery of the immovable race."[1] Read naturally, the "immovable" race is a family defined by steadiness of spirit: people who are not moved by the powers of fate. Across the ancient texts it is the nearest thing to a "star family".

The children of the light

The Hypostasis of the Archons ends with a vision of a great homecoming. Norea asks whether she is made of the rulers' matter. The angel Eleleth replies: "You, together with your offspring, are from the primeval father; from above, out of the imperishable light, their souls are come. Thus the authorities cannot approach them". At the end of the age, "all the children of the light will be truly acquainted with the truth and their root … They will all say with a single voice" the praise of the Father.[3] The Gospel of Thomas (saying 50) gives the family's password: "If they say to you, 'Where did you come from?', say to them, 'We came from the light'… If they say to you, 'Is it you?', say, 'We are its children, we are the elect of the living father.'"[4]

"Star family" and "children of the light" express the same intuition: that a person's true origin lies beyond this world and that others share it.

Discernment and free will

The Archive's two instructions, to invite only the benevolent and to decide for yourself what is true, also have Gnostic counterparts. The texts constantly warn of powers that imitate the light (see Counterfeit Spirit and Mimic Entities), and the Apocryphon teaches that the soul "in which the power will become stronger than the counterfeit spirit, is strong and it flees from evil".[1] Gnosticism itself, in Stephan Hoeller's summary, rests on "Gnosis, the knowledge of transcendence arrived at by way of interior, intuitive means".[5] That is knowledge each person must reach for themselves. "Only you can decide what you accept as truth" is, in that sense, a very Gnostic sentence.
