Ocean Intelligences

Ocean Intelligences are the first entry in the Anomalous Beings section of The Alien Archive. The Archive describes them as ancient, Earth-born intelligences that live as distributed awareness in the planet's deep oceans. They are guardians and regulators of the hydrosphere who observe humanity's relationship with the living Earth and make contact through dreams, emotions and sonar-like impressions. Water is one of the richest symbols in Gnostic myth. It is the mirror in which the heavenly image first appeared to the Archons, the surface over which Sophia moved, and the "living water" of the highest God.

• The deep oceanic environments of Earth, often described as emerging from vast underwater ecosystems, abyssal regions or distributed aquatic consciousness fields hidden beneath the planet's surface.

Relationship to Earth

• Deeply Earth-connected, elusive and non-invasive intelligences residing within ocean depths far beyond typical human access or perception.
• Believed to participate in maintaining equilibrium between the biological, chemical and energetic systems of Earth's oceans.
• They interact indirectly through dreams, emotional impressions, oceanic anomalies, intuitive contact experiences, sonar-like perceptions or unexplained underwater phenomena.

Gnostic perspective

The Gnostic texts contain no sea-dwelling intelligences. They do contain some of the most striking water imagery in ancient religious writing. In the Sethian myths, the waters are where the divine first becomes visible to the lower world, where an image is reflected, and where the difference between the true and the imitation begins.

The waters above and below

The Gnostic writers were reading, and often reversing, the opening of Genesis: "darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters." Genesis goes on to describe a firmament that "divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament".^[1] In the Apocryphon of John, the Savior corrects this. When Sophia "moved to and fro", he says, "Do not think it is, as Moses said, 'above the waters.'" Her motion was the restless movement of repentance and shame after her son, Yaldabaoth, had stolen her power.^[2]

The Gnostic cosmos has two kinds of water. At the summit, the invisible Father "looks at himself in his light which surrounds him, namely the spring of the water of life", and "gazes upon his image which he sees in the spring of the Spirit … his water-light which is in the spring of the pure light-water which surrounds him". From that act of self-reflection the first divine Thought, Barbelo, comes forth.^[2] Below, the chief archon gives souls a "water of forgetfulness … in order that they might not know from where they came".^[2] Water can be the medium of self-knowledge or of forgetting. The Archive's hidden, deep-dwelling intelligences sit well within that ambiguity.

The image in the waters

The central water scene comes in the creation of humanity. In the Apocryphon of John, a voice from the heights reveals the image of the First Human: "the whole aeon of the chief archon trembled, and the foundations of the abyss shook. And of the waters which are above matter, the underside was illuminated by the appearance of his image … And through the light they saw the form of the image in the water." The archons resolve: "'Come, let us create a man according to the image of God and according to our likeness, that his image may become a light for us.'"^[2] The Hypostasis of the Archons tells the same scene: "As incorruptibility looked down into the region of the waters, her image appeared in the waters; and the authorities of the darkness became enamored of her. But they could not lay hold of that image … because of their weakness – since beings that merely possess a soul cannot lay hold of those that possess a spirit".^[3]

In On the Origin of the World, the chief ruler himself is born from water. He appears "out of the waters, lion-like in appearance", and Pistis Sophia "saw him moving about in the depth of the waters". He never sees her face; "rather he saw in the water the likeness that spoke with him." Later "Pistis revealed her likeness of her greatness in the waters", and the text concludes that "the water was purified through the likeness of Pistis Sophia, who had appeared to the prime parent in the waters … The holy water, since it vivifies the all, purifies it."^[4]

Sophia's light on the waters

Read alongside the Archive, these passages suggest a quiet parallel. The Archive's Ocean Intelligences are "guardians" of the planet's waters and hold a collective awareness "linked to water and energetic flow". The Gnostic waters carry the reflected light of Sophia and hold the image of the true human. In the Apocryphon, the saving act at the end of the text is itself watery: the Savior raises the awakened soul and "sealed him in the light of the water with five seals, in order that death might not have power over him".^[2] The Gospel of Philip makes the mirror symbolism explicit: "None can see himself either in water or in a mirror without light. Nor again can you see in light without mirror or water. For this reason, it is fitting to baptize in the two, in the light and the water."^[5] An intelligence that lives in the waters and reflects humanity back to itself is a fitting modern image for that old teaching.

Background and history

The Archive's link between Ocean Intelligences and "the idea of Earth as a living system" echoes the Gaia hypothesis, formulated by the chemist James Lovelock and co-developed by the microbiologist Lynn Margulis in the 1970s. It proposes that living organisms and their inorganic surroundings form "a synergistic and self-regulating complex system that helps to maintain and perpetuate the conditions for life on the planet." The name came from the novelist William Golding, after the Greek personification of the Earth.^[6] The Archive's "consciousness-based ecology theories" extend that scientific idea in a spiritual direction.

"Unidentified submerged objects" (USOs) are a real naval term. The U.S. Navy uses it for whales, sharks and other sea creatures that can interfere with ship maneuvering, sonar operations and oceanographic research. Ufologists, including retired admiral Tim Gallaudet, have also used it for UFOs said to travel through water.^[7] The most famous modern ocean-linked encounter is the 2004 USS Nimitz "Tic Tac" incident. Commander David Fravor reported seeing a white, oval object "hovering above an ocean disturbance" off southern California.^[8] See UFOs and Spaceships.

Reflection

• The archons saw the true image only as a reflection in water. What do you see only in reflection?
