Interdimensional Beings are the second entry in the Atmospheric Beings section of The Alien Archive. The Archive describes them as boundary-crossing intelligences from overlapping "reality layers". They are always present, but perceptible only when a person's perceptual filters shift, as in meditation, dreams, sleep paralysis, trauma or high emotion. The closest Gnostic idea is the layered cosmos of the Nag Hammadi texts, where a veil divides the world of light (the Pleroma) from the world below, and certain beings pass back and forth across it.

- Associated with altered states of consciousness, sensory distortion, vibrational sensitivity and non-linear awareness.
- They communicate through energetic impressions, symbolic perception, intuitive cognition, electromagnetic anomalies, emotional resonance, dream-state interaction or non-verbal transmission rather than language.
Functions and roles
- Interdimensional observers, boundary-crossing intelligences or non-human consciousness forms interacting with layered reality systems.
- Monitoring, influencing or responding to energetic and perceptual fluctuations within overlapping dimensions.
- Catalysts for altered perception, psychological shifts, heightened awareness or anomalous experiential states.
- Frequently linked to dimensional bleed-through events, reality-instability phenomena and unexplained consciousness interactions.
Relationship to Earth
- They coexist alongside physical reality within overlapping dimensional frameworks, generally outside normal human perception.
- Occasionally described as becoming perceptible during altered states such as meditation, sleep paralysis, dreams, trauma states or high-emotion environments.
- Considered continuously present, but detectable only when perceptual filters shift because of physiological, psychological or energetic changes.

- Often featured in online communities discussing sleep paralysis experiences, altered perception events and perceived breaches in reality structure.
Gnostic perspective
"Dimensions" is a modern word, but the idea of a reality in layers is at the center of Gnostic cosmology. The Nag Hammadi texts describe a stack of worlds: a realm of light and fullness above, a boundary or veil, and below it the heavens of the rulers and the material world. Beings cross that boundary in both directions. The Archive's Interdimensional Beings can be read as the modern shape of that ancient picture.
Pleroma and Kenoma
The Greek Pleroma means "fullness". In Valentinian Gnosticism it is "the totality of the thirty Aeons or emanations which proceed from God, but are separated alike from Him and from the material universe", often spoken of as a place with a "within" and "without", an "above" and "below".[1] Its opposite is the Kenoma, "emptiness". A classic summary of the Valentinian system, quoted in Wikipedia's article, calls the Kenoma "the kingdom of this world, the region of matter and material things, the land of shadow and darkness", separated from the Pleroma "by Horos … or Boundary". The two regions mirror each other, "just as / The swan on still St Mary's lake / Floats double, swan and shadow."[2] The same article notes that "Not only have the thirty Æons their terrestrial counterparts; but their subdivisions also are represented in this lower region".[2] On this picture every reality has a counterpart layer, which is close to the Archive's "adjacent or intersecting reality layers".
The Boundary (Horos)
In the Valentinian myth reported by Irenaeus, the youngest Aeon, Sophia, strains so hard to comprehend the Father that she risks dissolving into him. She is saved by "the limiting power Horos, whose function it is to strengthen all things outside the ineffable Greatness, by confining each to its appointed place".[3] Horos (Boundary), also called Stauros (Cross), is a being whose nature is to be a threshold. The Archive's "quantum-like boundary states … where distinctions between observer, environment, and reality structure become fluid" is a modern description of that kind of edge-zone.
The veil between the worlds
The Sethian texts picture the boundary as a curtain. In the Hypostasis of the Archons, the great angel Eleleth explains: "A veil exists between the world above and the realms that are below; and shadow came into being beneath the veil; and that shadow became matter".[4] Sophia and her daughter Zoe gave Sabaoth, the repentant son of Yaldabaoth, "charge of the seventh heaven, below the veil between above and below".[4] On the Origin of the World says Sophia's first product "was between the immortal beings and those things that came into being after them … she (Sophia) functioned as a veil dividing mankind from the things above."[5] In the Wikipedia summary of the Hypostasis, the cosmos is divided by this veil, and the archons "are made out of matter, which is formed from the shadows cast by this veil."[6]
Crossers of the threshold
The Gnostic texts are full of beings who pass through the veil. The angel Eleleth descends to Norea. Light comes "out of the eighth heaven above and passed through all of the heavens of the earth" carrying "a human likeness".[5] In the Apocryphon of John, the Pronoia enters "the realm of darkness" three times, and "the foundations of chaos shook", yet the rulers "did not recognize me".[7] Like the Archive's beings, these messengers are present but unrecognized except by those whose perception has shifted. The Archive says Interdimensional Beings become detectable "when perceptual filters shift". The Gnostic equivalent is gnosis, a change in the knower that lets them see what was already there.
A caution is also appropriate. Not every crosser in these texts is benevolent. The archons, too, "changed themselves in their likeness" to deceive (see Mimic Entities and Counterfeit Spirit).[7] The Archive likewise describes these beings as "monitoring, influencing, or responding", neither simply friendly nor simply hostile.
Background and history
The modern "interdimensional hypothesis" in UFO studies is most associated with the French-American astronomer and computer scientist Jacques Vallée. He began by defending the extraterrestrial hypothesis, but by 1969 had concluded it "was too narrow and ignored too much data". In Passport to Magonia: From Folklore to Flying Saucers (1969) he began exploring the commonalities between UFOs, religious movements, demons, angels, ghosts and psychic phenomena.[8] His alternative proposed that "The entities could be multidimensional beyond space-time; thus they could coexist with humans, yet remain undetected".[8] That is very nearly the Archive's own wording. A research project at the Center for Advanced Studies of the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg describes how his focus "later shifted to comparative folklore", culminating in a "control system" theory positing "an unidentified intelligence that regulates human perception and access to the phenomenon."[9] See also UFOs and Spaceships.
The Archive's references to "liminal spaces" and "reality glitches" come from 21st-century internet culture. The "liminal space" aesthetic (empty, transitional places that feel uncanny) spread across online platforms in 2019. It became closely tied to the Backrooms urban legend and grew during the COVID-19 pandemic.[10] The link with sleep paralysis has a medical side: between 8% and 50% of people experience sleep paralysis at some point, and it can include the sense of "an intruding presence or dark figure in the room". It is thought to have fed stories of alien abduction and other paranormal events.[11]
