Atmospheric Beings is the fifth section of The Alien Archive (page 30). It gathers four kinds of being that have no home planet and no fixed body: Energy Beings, Interdimensional Beings, Shadow Entities and Mimic Entities. The Archive treats them as presences in the thin places of reality, felt more than seen. In Gnostic terms this section sits in the "middle" region between the material world and the realm of light, the zone the old texts filled with rulers, veils and shadows.
From the Alien Archive
The Archive introduces the section this way:
These are non-physical or extradimensional entities described in esoteric, paranormal, and metaphysical traditions as existing within subtle energetic layers of reality that overlap with the physical environment. Often associated with atmospheric, interdimensional, or energetic phenomena rather than stable material forms, they are frequently characterized as consciousness-based presences composed of fluctuating vibrational or shadow-like energy. Descriptions vary widely across traditions, ranging from neutral observational intelligences to ambiguous or emotionally reactive energetic presences associated with altered states of consciousness, liminal environments, and unexplained paranormal experiences.
Beings in this section
- Energy Beings (p. 31): luminous, translucent, electromagnetically reactive consciousness made of energy or vibration rather than biology. They are described as observers and catalysts for awakening.
- Interdimensional Beings (p. 32): boundary-crossing intelligences from adjacent or intersecting "reality layers". They are always present and perceptible only when the observer's filters shift.
- Shadow Entities (p. 33): dark silhouettes seen in low light or peripheral vision, linked to sleep paralysis, fear responses and liminal spaces.
- Mimic Entities (p. 34): adaptive intelligences that imitate human forms, voices or familiar signals, yet seem subtly "incorrect" or uncanny.
Common threads
Across the four entries the Archive repeats the same features:
- No planetary origin. Each is said to come from "subtle dimensions", "adjacent or intersecting reality layers" or "consciousness-based layers of reality" rather than a star system.
- Fluctuating form. Visibility, density and structure change with environment and with the observer.
- Non-verbal contact. They communicate through energetic impressions, emotional resonance, symbols, dreams and intuition rather than language.
- Altered states. They appear during meditation, dreams, sleep paralysis, trauma, grief or other highly charged emotional states, and in low-light or isolated places.
- Ambiguous intent. They range from neutral observers to emotionally reactive or unsettling presences. That fits the Archive's closing reminder in Star Family that beings, like humans, "cover the full spectrum" of intentions.
Gnostic perspective
Ancient Gnostic texts do not describe "atmospheric beings" in the modern paranormal sense. They do, however, fill the space between earth and the divine with non-physical powers, and those powers are the natural Gnostic counterpart to this section.
The Hypostasis of the Archons opens by citing Paul on "the authorities of the darkness" and his warning that "our contest is not against flesh and blood; rather, the authorities of the universe and the spirits of wickedness."[1] Ephesians gives the same idea its best-known image: "the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience" (Ephesians 2:2, KJV).[2] In the Gnostic systems these "authorities" become the Archons. The word means "rulers". They are the builders and keepers of the material cosmos, commonly set over the seven planetary heavens (the Hebdomad), and their role is to keep souls from rising out of the material realm.[3]
The Gnostic cosmos also has a boundary that suits the Archive's "subtle layers that overlap with the physical environment". In the Hypostasis, the angel Eleleth teaches that "A veil exists between the world above and the realms that are below; and shadow came into being beneath the veil; and that shadow became matter".[1] On the Origin of the World says that Sophia herself "functioned as a veil dividing mankind from the things above".[4] Read side by side with the Archive, each of the four beings lines up with a Gnostic theme:
- Energy Beings correspond to the pneuma, the luminous spirit or "divine spark" that the Gnostics saw as the true, non-material self (see Pneumatics, Psychics and Hylics).
- Interdimensional Beings correspond to the veil and the boundary (Horos) between the Pleroma ("fullness") and the Kenoma ("emptiness").
- Shadow Entities correspond to the shadow that the Gnostic creation myths place at the root of matter itself.
- Mimic Entities correspond to the Counterfeit Spirit (antimimon pneuma) of the Apocryphon of John, a spirit that imitates the true Spirit in order to lead souls astray.
Gnostic practice was about discernment: telling the light within from the powers that imitate or obscure it. That matches the Archive's own advice to invite only benevolent beings into one's field.

- Which of these presences feel like weather passing through a room, and which feel like someone looking back?
- If a being is known only in altered states, what does that say about the state it is met in?
- How would you tell a presence that clarifies from one that merely imitates clarity?
