Energy Beings

Energy Beings are the first entry in the Atmospheric Beings section of The Alien Archive. The Archive describes them as non-physical, consciousness-based entities made of energetic or vibrational fields rather than biological matter. They are luminous, shifting and responsive, and they appear in meditation, dreams and emotionally charged places, where they act as catalysts for heightened perception and spiritual awakening. Their nearest Gnostic counterpart is pneuma, the spirit of light. Gnostic texts held that a spark of it is hidden inside every awakened person.

Relationship to Earth

• They exist alongside or overlapping physical reality while remaining largely outside ordinary human perception.
• They appear during altered states, paranormal encounters, dreams, meditation, sleep paralysis or emotionally charged environments.
• Their relationship to Earth is typically framed as non-direct and observational, though sometimes reactive to emotional, environmental or energetic conditions.

• Common in modern paranormal media, New Age metaphysics, conspiracy lore, and discussions of multidimensional or energetic beings.
• Referenced in stories involving atmospheric anomalies, energetic apparitions, liminal spaces and unexplained perceptual phenomena.

Gnostic perspective

The Gnostic texts never describe free-floating "energy beings" of the paranormal kind. Their whole picture of the human person, though, rests on a luminous, non-material element hidden inside the body. The Archive's Energy Beings can be read as that element seen from outside: light-consciousness no longer wearing a body.

Pneuma: the spirit of light

Greek philosophy used pneuma ("breath", "spirit") for an active, immaterial principle of life.^[1] The Gnostics made it the highest part of the human being. In the summary by Gnostic bishop and scholar Stephan A. Hoeller, humankind "contains a perishable physical and psychic component, as well as a spiritual component which is a fragment of the divine essence. This latter part is often symbolically referred to as the 'divine spark'." Hoeller adds that "Humans are generally ignorant of the divine spark resident within them."^[2] The Valentinian school sorted people by which element was awake in them: pneumatics (spiritual), psychics (soul-centered) and hylics (material).^[2] See Pneumatics, Psychics and Hylics. The Archive's emphasis on "heightened sensory awareness" and "non-verbal modes of cognition" is close to what these texts call the awakened pneumatic state.

The luminous body in the Apocryphon of John

In the Apocryphon of John, the archons build Adam's body limb by limb, but "their product was completely inactive and motionless for a long time." Only when the chief archon, Yaldabaoth, is tricked into breathing his mother Sophia's stolen power into it does it come alive: "The body moved and gained strength, and it was luminous." The archons grow jealous "when they recognized that he was luminous, and that he could think better than they".^[3] Here the living light, not the body, is what makes a person real. The body is the vessel and the light is the being.

On the Origin of the World tells of a light that "came out of the eighth heaven above and passed through all of the heavens of the earth", with "a human likeness" inside it. This emissary is called "Adam of Light".^[4] A being of light in human form, glimpsed crossing the heavens, is about as close as ancient literature comes to the Archive's "luminous, translucent" presence.

"The light-man within us"

The sayings of the Gospel of Thomas are among the most quoted on this theme. Saying 24: "There is light within a man of light, and he lights up the whole world. If he does not shine, he is darkness." Saying 50 tells the disciples to answer, if asked where they come from: "We came from the light, the place where the light came into being on its own accord".^[5] In the Pistis Sophia, Mary explains that the Law's command to leave father and mother is not about the body or soul but about "the power which hath came forth out of the Saviour, and which is the light-man within us to-day."^[6] The same text says the rulers "breathe into that soul" a "portion of my power" so that "the soul can stand".^[7]

Catalysts for awakening

The Archive calls Energy Beings "catalysts for heightened perception, spiritual awakening, emotional confrontation". That matches the role Gnostic myth gives to messengers of light. In the Apocryphon of John, the Pronoia (Forethought) descends three times into the darkness, calling out: "He who hears, let him get up from the deep sleep."^[3] Hoeller notes that in Gnostic thought the indwelling spark "must be awakened from its terrestrial slumber by the saving knowledge that comes 'from without'."^[2] On a Gnostic reading, a luminous presence met in meditation or a dream is less a visitor from somewhere else than a reminder of the light the seeker already carries.

Background and history

The idea that spirit is a subtle, luminous "stuff" is very old. The Stoics treated pneuma as a fine, fiery breath that pervades the cosmos, and later medical writers (the Pneumatic school of Athenaeus of Cilicia, 1st century CE) made it the principle of health and disease.^[1] The "divine spark" survived Gnosticism: the medieval Cathars held the belief, and some modern Quakers use similar language for the "inner light".^[8]

The modern "energy being" vocabulary of frequencies, vibrations and electromagnetic reactivity comes from 20th-century New Age and paranormal culture, which recast older spirit language in the terms of physics. The Archive links these beings with sleep paralysis, dreams and emotionally charged environments, which places them in the same experiential territory as Shadow Entities and Interdimensional Beings.

• When a presence feels "highly charged", is the charge coming from it, or from what it stirs in you?
• What conditions (quiet, grief, awe, exhaustion) make your own perception most fluid?
