Lyrans

Lyrans are, in the Alien Archive, an ancient feline or feline-humanoid people connected to the constellation Lyra, described as ancestral to many humanoid species across the cosmos and among the earliest humanoid civilizations. The Archive portrays them as golden, lion-like beings who balance primal instinct with high spiritual awareness, guardians of "biological consciousness architecture" who embedded information into worlds through sunlight and frequency. Gnostic myth offers two fascinating counterpoints: its own story of a luminous first Human from whom a hidden race descends, and a deeply ambivalent treatment of the lion as a symbol of raw power that must be transformed.

Gnostic perspective

The Gnostics knew Lyra only as a pattern of stars, if at all, and they had no feline star-people. But the Archive's Lyrans raise two questions Gnostic myth cared about intensely — where does the human race truly come from? and what should be done with the lion in us? — and the answers make a rich, sometimes surprising, comparison. The parallels are interpretive.

An ancestral first Human of light

The Archive says the Lyran lineage is "ancestral to multiple humanoid species throughout the cosmos." Sethian Gnostics told of a heavenly, archetypal Human who precedes every earthly one. In the Apocryphon of John, the invisible Spirit names "the perfect Human, the first revelation and the truth, Pigera-Adamas," and sets him "over the first Aeon with the great Autogenes Christ, beside the first Light, Armozel"; his child Seth is set beside the second Light, and "the seed of Seth" beside the third.^[1] In The Three Steles of Seth, Seth praises this heavenly father: "I bless thee, Father Geradama(s)… Thou art light, since thou beholdest light. Thou hast revealed light."^[2] On the Origin of the World adds a luminous "Adam of Light," whose light appears "to all the forces of the heavens," and who later wishes "to enter his light — i.e., the eighth heaven."^[3]

The Sethians thus imagined the elect of humanity as descended, in their true essence, from a first Human of light and a hidden "seed" planted among the aeons — the "living and unshakable race," as the Three Steles calls it.^[2] The Archive's Lyrans play a very similar mythic role: an elder, luminous lineage from which many peoples descend. The Gospel of Thomas touches the same theme when Jesus speaks of "your images which came into being before you" — images that, the saying adds, never die.^[4] See Sethianism and Star Family.

The lion that becomes human

The Archive's Lyrans are "teachers of balance between instinctual survival intelligence and higher spiritual awareness." One of the most enigmatic sayings in the Gospel of Thomas can be read as a teaching about exactly this balance: "Blessed is the lion which becomes man when consumed by man; and cursed is the man whom the lion consumes, and the lion becomes man."^[4] One common way to read it takes the lion as the passions: when human awareness integrates the lion, the lion is raised into humanity; when the lion devours the human, the result is still a "man," but one ruled by the beast. The Archive's ideal Lyran — the "integration of primal nature with higher awareness" — is the blessed half of this saying.

The lion-faced ruler

Gnostic readers will also notice that the lion is, in the classical texts, often a dangerous image. In the Apocryphon of John, when Sophia brings forth an offspring without her partner, "it changed into a form of a lion-faced serpent. And its eyes were like lightning fires which flash." This being is Yaldabaoth, the ignorant creator.^[1] In the Pistis Sophia, the arrogant "Self-willed" power "emanated out of himself a great lion-faced power," which lures Sophia down into chaos and takes away her light; Sophia laments that she followed it "thinking that the lion-faced light-power belonged to thee" — that is, mistaking it for the true Light.^[5][6] In Gnostic symbolism, then, a radiant lion can be either the power to be transformed or a counterfeit light. The Archive's benevolent, "sovereign" Lyrans stand on the bright side of that ambiguity — but the tradition would invite the same discernment Sophia learned the hard way. (Compare Draconians, whose Gnostic parallel is Yaldabaoth's serpent form.)

The Pistis Sophia has a lighter feline touch as well: in its vision of the heavens, the ship of the moon, steered by dragons and drawn by white bulls, bears "a cat's face" on its prow.^[7]

Music, harmony and celestial order

The Archive notes Lyra's long connection with "music, harmony, and celestial order." In On the Origin of the World, the heavenly court of Sabaoth, modeled on the eighth heaven, includes "seven virgins… possessing thirty harps, and psalteries and trumpets, glorifying him," and the same text says that when Sophia made the sun and the moon, "she put a seal upon her heaven."^[3] The Valentinians, as reported by Irenaeus, also built their divine Pleroma on harmonious number, beginning from "the first and first-begotten Pythagorean Tetrad."^[8] Heavenly order as music and number is a shared inheritance of Greek, Gnostic and modern esoteric thought.

Background and history

The constellation

Lyra represents the lyre of Orpheus in Greek mythology, whose music was said to be so beautiful that even rocks could be charmed. Its brightest star, Vega, is one of the brightest in the night sky, about 25 light-years away; Vega was the pole star around 12,000 BCE and will be again around 14,000 CE. Lyra also contains the Ring Nebula, a famous planetary nebula, and gives its name to the Lyrids meteor shower. Arab astronomers saw the constellation as a vulture or an eagle diving with folded wings.^[9]

The Prism of Lyra and the Lyran lineage

The idea that Lyra is the cradle of humanoid life comes mainly from channeled literature of the late 20th century. The most influential text is The Prism of Lyra by Lyssa Royal and Keith Priest, first published in December 1989. Its title refers to "the archetypal idea of the entrance of consciousness into this reality. For Earth's galactic family the entrance point exists within the Lyran system. As consciousness / energy emerged, it fragmented into seven density frequencies, much as a prism would fragment light into seven visible colors."^[10]

The feline Lyran specifically is also traced to Royal. Quoting her Galactic Family: An Overview of Genotypes, Exopaedia records that "one other Lyran subgroup is also mammal and what you would consider to be humanoid — but whose physical appearance resembles what you call the feline kingdom on your world," and that they are "not cat people, but humanoids who have catlike qualities," with catlike noses, slightly pointed ears and large eyes.^[11] In later New Age and starseed writing, feline Lyrans appear as lion-like, golden beings like those of the Archive, often linked with the lion and cat deities of ancient cultures.
